Hair Care

Your locks deserve the best and you want to avoid ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), parabens, synthetic fragrances, Triclosan, polysorbates, Dimethicone and more.

One of the best things you can do for your hair (and body) is to filter your shower water. I personally love shower filters by ProOne and Sante. They both have awesome pressure. My hair is considerably less dry and frizzy when we filter our shower water.

Wellnesse

My new favorite shampoo and conditioner! I have a VERY, very sensitive scalp, and always have. Every shampoo I have tried, surprisingly even the most organic of products, causes flaking and itchiness - except this one! I love that it extremely safe (all ingredients under a 2) by the Environmental Working Group.

The creator of Wellnesse is a mom herself. You might have even heard of her, The Wellness Mama. She has spent over a decade perfecting her formulas and in my opinion, the end product represents her hard work well. Their B Corp certification means that they have achieved the highest verified standard of environmental and social impact.

From their website
”We believe that mindful business practices can have far-reaching, positive impacts in the world. That’s why we have an unwavering commitment to our core values in every step of our process, from supply chain to final product. We source the best ingredients and packaging and are always working to become even more sustainable. With full transparency, you’ll never have to wonder about the safety of our products or what we put in them.”

There are plenty of other low rating options (the lower the better) on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin deep site, as well. I have probably tried half of them attempting to find something that doesn’t irritate my scalp!

Original Sprout leave-in Conditioner

I’m really picky about my conditioner, because I have coarse hair that is prone to frizziness in the winter, yet my scalp tends towards more oily. I have to be careful not to use a conditioner that makes my hair look greasy at the roots, but is effective enough at taming the frizz. It’s a fine balancing act. 😆 I wish there was an emoji with big hair!

The Original Sprout Leave-in Conditioner’s lightweight formula is made with nourishing emollients and arnica for split ends, making it ideal for detangling and eliminating frizz from damaged hair. Apply onto ends for optimal moisture and movement.

I use this religiously for my coarse, wavy hair. I’ve even applied it dry at the tips for more texture and it doesn’t over-grease-ifying my hair. Yup, I made that up.

AppleBioitic Probiotic Hair Rinse

I love this as a periodic treatment for my scalp and hair. It really softens the hair and calms the scalp.

Applebiotic Hair Rinse is a unique blend of Apple Cider Vinegar (with mother) and Probiotic Technology. Apple Cider Vinegar leaves your hair silky and shiny and Probiotic promotes skin renewal and improves skin quality. Our rinse softens hair and exfoliates skin, gets rid of product buildup while conditioning and nourishing your hair and scalp. Infused with extracts from herbs such as Organic Aloe, Green Tea and Chamomile, our rinse will leave your hair feeling fresh and squeaky clean!

French Girl Rose Sea Spray

Instant texture and definition for surfer girl hair without stepping foot in the water. Made with a variety of salts and nourishing essential oils to leave hair with an effortless beachy look and a soft, touchable feel. With the subtle, calming smell of Rose. Wavy hair absolutely NEEDS this product!! French Girl never uses chemicals, preservatives, synthetic fragrances or fillers, and they are always evolving their sustainability efforts.

Morrocco Method Int’l Sapphire Volume Mist

This super-light spritz is my go-to for everyday hair (see below) because it is rated a 1 by the Environmental Working Group and it is a nice light Volumizer. Many oil-based products are too heavy for my already heavy hair and just weights it down, not this one! I also love anything that has long-term healing benefits.

Sapphire Volumizer Mist is a spray on, leave-in hair conditioner that adds luster, shine, and detangling power. This spray conditioner is enhanced with natural grapeseed oil, making your hair look thicker and fuller soon after use, and promoting long-term thickening results. It works to heal the hair follicle that may have been damaged due to synthetic hair color, perms and environmental concerns while hydrating the hair and scalp with precious grapeseed oil.

Pure Haven hair spray

It’s hard to find a good natural hairspray with limited ingredients. This is my go-to product, after trying out many different brands. Pure Haven products really do have minimal ingredients and they avoid all the top toxins. This hairspray is lightweight with leaves your hair touchable. Thank goodness it’s not the 80’s any longer, natural hairspray just wouldn’t cut it! Safe for color-treated hair.Look around the website. They have a lot of great personal care products like toothpaste, deodorant, make-up, pet care products, baby wash and lotions, even sunblock. We don’t use anything else from this store, because I have other brands I like better. Just be sure to check their ingredients closely, since I haven’t tried their other products. A lot of their products are high salicylate with ingredients like aloe and coconut oil.

Cleure

If you or a loved one needs to avoid high salicylate ingredients that are commonly found in many natural personal care products, like coconut oil and aloe vera, this is the brand for you! Our younger son is very sensitive to salicylate so I’ve had to experiment with a lot of natural products for him. We use their hand soap (one in every bathroom for my younger son), sunblock and hair gel. We used to use their shampoo, but I don’t love it, to be honest, so we use a brand that we order from outside of the USA. I will post that link below too, if you want to join me in importing shampoo from the UK. 😆Cleure also has skin care, oral care, and make-up so look around to see if you like anything else.

Mistry’s Neem 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner

There appear to be a few ingredients that might be high salicylate, but they don’t aggravate our most sensitive son, and this shampoo is very inexpensive, but it comes from the UK, so I order in bulk about once or twice a year so that I only have to pay shipping for one or two orders in a year. Ingredients: Aqua, Reetha Extract (Sapindus laurifolia), Shikakai Extract (Acacia concinna), Sunflower Wax (Helianthus annuus), Chlorophyll (Chlorophyll), Potenised® Neem oil (Azadirachta indica), Nettle (Urtica dioica), Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis), Arnica (Arnica montana), Calendula (Calendula officinalis).

Repair Hair Towel

This really works! With my really long, coarse, wavy hair, I absolutely notice a difference using this towel! To get the most out of your hair you need a smooth hair towel. Hair is most vulnerable when wet and easily damaged by friction. This Ultimate Hair Towel is completely smooth and made of super soft combed cotton. It is smoother than terry cloth and microfiber allowing water to gently sink into the surface locking in essential moisture while leaving the hair healthy and reviving its natural shine and vitality!

HairPrint

I have no experience with this product, but it’s truly a one-of-a-kind hair color option! Try at your own risk, but please do report back if you do! I think it’s brilliant, I just don’t need to color my hair and may just embrace aging when my graying picks up the pace. 😉

From their website:

Hairprint restores gray hair to its true color in an hour. No smell, no burning, no toxins, no dyes, no kidding. It is the only product in the world that repigments hair. It contains eight food-grade ingredients. It lasts for months and does not wash out.

How I get my hair smooth and silky

My hair is coarse and wavy, not a pretty wavy either, a kinky uneven wavy that frizzes without help. To get my hair this silky smooth, I condition with Wellnesse Enriching Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair FIRST, and I let it sit on my hair for 5 full minutes. Then I rinse it out and wash my hair twice, with the Wellnesse Cleansing Shampoo. Nothing else! I blow dry with a large round brush and this is what I get.

How I get my hair full and wavy

I have the benefit of very full hair, but it has a strange kinky wave that is prone to frizz so I can’t just let this dry. In the summer, the humidity is my friend and I let it dry naturally, but in the winter, it’s either a pony tail or a blow dryer!

I wash my hair then condition only on the shaft and ends, I avoid my roots, because my dry frizzy hair is paired with an oily scalp (fun!). Then I use the Apple Biotic Rinse.

After washing, I apply the Original Sprout Leave-in Conditioner with the Cleure gel to all of my ends first, working my way up toward the scalp.

I blow dry with a diffuser leaving it mostly damp so that I can continue to scrunch the ends until it’s dry. After removing the dampness at the roots with the blow dryer, I add a little of the Pure Haven hair spray (scrunch) and then once it’s dry, I use a wide tooth comb or a pick and loosely comb through it all.

My usual everyday hair

This is my super easy typical look. I know it’s not much different from the wavy hair, but it’s smoother and looser in texture. With the wavy hair products, I can make more volume, this tends to be more flat and natural.

To get “this”, again I use Wellnesse Enriching Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair FIRST, leaving it in for a full five minutes, then I wash my hair with Wellnesse Cleansing Shampoo. Yup, it’s backwards, but oddly, it works! One thing I didn’t mention in either of the above commentaries is that I use a hair towel to prevent frizz and improve drying speed. It reduces excess moisture. So I will leave it on my hair while I moisturize, apply my makeup if I am wearing any, brush my teeth, get dressed, straighten up the bathroom, etc and THEN I remove the hair towel. When the hair is drier to begin with, styling and drying is so much quicker and easier. In the winter, I can’t get away without drying or I end up like a frizz ball, but in the summer, I prefer to let my hair dry naturally to prevent damage and increase wave smoothness.

Ok back to “this” hair. I use two light spray products to prevent the ends of my hair from frizzing. I love this first product, Morocco Method Int’l Sapphire Volume Mist! It’s rated a 1 at by The Environmental Working Group and the ingredients are purely oils, that’s it. The nice thing about this spray is that the oils aren’t overpowering, they don’t make the hair greasy, they offer just a subtle nutritional spritz of softness to the hair. It may not be strong enough tif you need a heavy anti-frizz, but combined with the next product, I think it’s just enough for my hair, even in the winter!

After I put a few squirts of each product in my hair, I only blow-dry the very top of my hair, the crown, with a round brush. Then I use the diffuser and just remove the dampness from the underneath layers of my hair. I know what you are thinking, if you have that kinky wavy hair type like me, and yes, it means I still have some of that in the underneath layers, but remember, this isn’t my going out and refined look, it’s my everyday, simple-to-do hair.

Last, I spritz on some French Girl, Rose Sea Spray to give it that separated, although not oily look that I love. It’s great for beachy hair, if you use more of it all throughout the hair shaft, I like to use it just on the wavy ends for this look.

On days in between showers, you will find me in a pony tail!
