Water Filtration

You are exposed to your tap water daily, multiple times a day. It goes in and on your body and whatever is lurking in that water, whether it’s city or well water, is hitching a ride into your body! Learn about the many chemicals found in drinking water here.

There are a few ways you can go with this. You can filter your whole house with a basic whole house filtration device and then you can kick up the filtration at your drinking water either under the sink or using a pitcher or gravity filtration tank and then use inexpensive shower filter shower heads. Or you can invest in a more thorough whole house filtration system that will do it all, filtering drinking and showering water all in one.

At our beach house, we use a ProOne countertop, sink adapter filter for our drinking and cooking water and their showered filter for our shower. At our primary home, we use the Greenfield whole house filter, then we also filter our drinking water and freezer ice cub maker water with a separate system by Atla, as well as the Sante Ultimate shower filter for our showers.

WARNING - I am all about transparency, and I know a lot of people use Berkey water filtration and swear by them, but I have been concerned about their filters since I first heard that their fluoride filters contain aluminum oxide. I know a handful of people who had seen testing to confirm this aluminum oxide doesn’t stay in the filter, but leaches into the drinking water. Here is a very thorough article showing third party test results proving aluminum is ADDED to water and more, and this should create concern around this company. The ProPur (rebranded as ProOne) uses silver, so if you are concerned with silver particles ending up in your water, that should be a consideration, although I have never seen testing to confirm one way or another. Their filters do remove fluoride though. This image is from the author of the article linked above about aluminum in the white Berkey filters. If you have a Berkey system, you can use Aquametrix gravity blocks to replace your Berkey filters. You’re welcome. 😉

Whole house or under sink filtration - greenfield water solutions

A whole house water filtration system is going to be the most expensive option, because it filters and structures the water for the entire house. Every faucet will provide you with drinkable, safe water though! It’s like having spring water tapped into your plumbing. 😉 The filters must be replaced annually, but if you want your entire water system to be filtered, this is a viable option.

They also offer an under sink filtration option which structures the water as well as filtering phenomenally well without removing all of the minerals. I love that his units are all stainless steel instead of plastic like every other filtration system out there.

I am a fan of structured water. Studies have confirmed that healthy cells are surrounded by structured water, while unhealthy cells are surrounded by chaotic water molecules, aka - unstructured water. Water in nature is structured naturally by its surroundings by running over rocks and soil.

We currently use this whole house water filter in our home. The owner, Gary Greenfield, is very passionate about his products and their safety. I would encourage you to contact him and ask any questions you might have about this filtration system. I love that it structures the water in addition to filtering it with zeolite.

See his articles regarding the benefits of structured water.

In our home, I’ve combined this whole house filter with the Atla (link below) under sink filter (both structure water and filter out fluoride) and I have had fluoride excretion testing done that confirms I do not have fluoride toxicity!! Also important to note, I try to avoid public tap water as much as feasibly possible. I NEVER drink water at restaurants unless it’s bottled by a company I trust, I bring my own water everywhere I go, but I recognize that by eating anything outside of my home, there is a risk of it being cooked with or in fluoridated water. But so far I am maintaining fluoride well below the dangerous threshold which suggests that what I am doing is working. Since fluoride displaces iodine, creating a deficiency that can increase thyroid dysfunction and reproductive problems such as cancer and fibroids, I am happy to share this information. I do also take iodine and selenium to counteract the myriad of toxicities that displace iodine.

ATLA

Previously known as AquaLiv, which has been rebranded to Atla.

It’s really important to filter your water without removing minerals. When minerals are depleted in our drinking water, it will actually leach water from our body and bones! Reverse Osmosis and Distilled water do this. I consider them dead water. Ideally, you want mineral-rich, structured water, whenever possible. AquaLiv offers both and their under sink systems are very reasonable. The Atla water system is engineered to create a naturally alkaline pH of 7.5-9.5 and is completely self-regulating.

For our unit, I added a second fluoride cartridge with an added filter housing unit so that we are double covered for fluoride reduction. We also had a hose run from the unit under our sink to our freezer line for filtered, structured ice water. Hey, if it’s going in your body, you want it filtered!

I love this quote from the Atla website!

You don’t call a plumber for health advice so why choose a drinking water system designed by a plumber?

"Through all my research, there is not a water filtration system on the market that can compare to the AquaLiv [now Atla] water system. I am so impressed with these filter's superior ability to not only remove contaminants without removing the beneficial minerals, but go above and beyond by alkalizing with minerals and structuring. AquaLiv [now Atla] has brilliantly infused cutting edge technology into this very affordable system that for the first time allows you to have water in your home as pure and as clean as an artesian spring in nature. I recommend AquaLiv [now Atla] to all my patients so they too can hydrate and cleanse their body with energized living-water."

PRo One

ProOne makes a lot of different options ranging from countertop and under counter systems to shower heads and whole house systems (although they do NOT offer structured water like the whole house and under counter systems above). They even have a reasonably priced water pitcher, but keep in mind that it is plastic. They also have a saltless water softening system, which intrigues me, although I know nothing about this technology…yet! It claims to use magnesium and calcium though.

We use one of their portable stainless steel gravity filtration tanks (the Nomad) in our beach house and when we travel. It filters enough water for cooking and drinking for our family of four, and we are home all day most days. We probably refill it once or twice a day during regular use. We also use their shower head filters.

I’ve chosen ProOne over Berkey, because they use silver rather than alumina in their fluoride filters.

Shower filter

The Sante Ultimate dual KDF shower water filter for city water is the strongest shower head filter on the market and removes chloramine, chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, bacteria, chemicals, and more and keeps them from harming your skin, your hair color or your health! The Ultimate KDF Shower Head filter removes up to 99.99% of harmful chlorine.

They also sell a water filter for well water. The Ultimate dual KDF55 shower filter for well water will remove and eliminate: chlorine, iron, heavy metals and more with the dual action of two KDF filter cartridges. The Ultimate well water shower head filter contains 100% KDF 55.

What is KDF?

KDF 55 and KDF 85 Process Media can remove up to 99% of water-soluble lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. All KDF Process Media forms are effective in controlling the buildup of bacteria, algae, fungi and scale, making them ideal for use in GAC beds, ion exchange resins, carbon block filters and inline carbon filters. Wherever these Media are used, they can eliminate the need for costly, and sometimes harmful, chemical treatments.

Do KDF Process Media offer any other advantages?

In a word, "Yes." All KDF Process Media are guaranteed for product purity. A certified analytical sheet accompanies each manufacturing run. Patented KDF Process Media are 100% recyclable and contain no chemical additives. Our Medium is classified as a "pesticide device" by the US Environmental Protection Agency so no pesticide registration is required. Our Media also meet EPA and Food and Drug Administration standards for maximum limits of zinc and copper in potable water.

Do your filters ever clog up?

Our cartridges are oversized and contain more media than standard competitor cartridges offering 50% more capacity.  What does this mean for our customer?  They offer a longer life and lower overall cost.  All of our cartridges are quality made in the USA.

Due to the manufacturing process, we never see clogging or channeling as you can with other brands of shower filters. We do offer a pre filter for areas with very heavy sediment or rust in the water. Changing your pre-filter refills and filter refills regularly will prevent filters from clogging and causing damage to the filter itself.
